BORDER BOUND - The Boat Studio Summer Residencies

The Residency

For our summer project ‘Border Bound’ we will run two residential journeys aboard The Boat Studio narrowboat connecting the Welsh village of Llangollen to the English town of Chester. This is an opportunity for collaboration, dialogue and ideas exchange with artists and TBS founders Ellie Young and Amber Mottram.

Each journey will travel over the famous Pontcysyllte Aquaduct and include trips to Chirk Castle, Wrexham County Borough Museum and Archives and Llangollen museum. Each trip will cross the Welsh/English border challenging the artists to consider belonging and identity in a historical setting. All artists will be provided mentoring opportunities with Steffan Jones-Hughes at Oriel Davies and James Harper at Tŷ Pawb to aid their professional development.

Each trip will culminate in an open boat event/exhibition at Telford’s Warehouse (Chester) and Llangollen Wharf (Llangollen) providing the artists a chance to reach new audiences.

The first residency, Chester to Llangollen, will take place from the 4th – 11th August

The second, Llangollen to Chester from the 16th – 23rd September.

  • Thankyou very much to everyone who applied to our Open Call for Border Bound. We had many quality applicants and that made for a really hard decision. We are however delighted to announce the successful applicants are Alice Briggs – Wales and Elizabeth Wewiora – North West of England. Very much looking forward to getting this project started!
